What Is a Barcode Scanner and How Does It Read a Code

A barcode scanner reads the striped 1D codes on product packaging, shipping labels, and inventory tags, and returns the number they encode — the EAN or UPC you would look up in a store. This tool does it in your browser, using either your camera for live scanning or an uploaded image, with no dedicated app to install. It reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, and QR codes. EAN-13 encodes each digit as two bars and two spaces across seven modules, and it flips the encoding pattern in the left half to signal orientation, letting the reader work out whether you scanned the label upside down. The final digit is a check digit computed from the preceding twelve, so a misread is usually rejected rather than silently reported wrong.
