Drop in the article, study notes or report section you want reformatted. Use a passage long enough to judge the effect properly rather than a single sentence.
Read the preview, where each word carries a bold opening fragment scaled to its length. Notice whether your eye moves between the anchors more comfortably than on plain text.
Click Copy HTML to take the text with its bold tags intact for a document, notes app or web page. A plain-text field will strip the formatting and lose the effect.
Bionic reading is a text format that bolds the opening letters of every word and leaves the rest at normal weight. The claim behind it is that your brain frequently identifies a familiar word from its first few characters and fills in the remainder without fully reading it, so emphasising those characters gives your eye fixed anchor points to jump between. Readers who struggle to hold their place in long blocks of plain prose — including many people with attention difficulties — often report it helps most. Students working through dense material and professionals skimming reports are the other two groups who reach for it regularly. The conversion is a rule applied word by word. Word length decides how much gets emphasised: very short words receive a single bold character, medium words two or three, and longer words a proportionally larger opening fragment, typically somewhere between a third and a half of the letters. That scaling matters, because bolding a fixed number of characters would either overwhelm three-letter words or barely touch ten-letter ones, and the result would look arbitrary rather than rhythmic. Punctuation and spacing are untouched, and only the visual weight changes — no letters are added, removed or reordered. Output is shown as a live preview, and a Copy HTML action gives you the text wrapped in bold tags so the emphasis survives into a document, a notes app or a web page that accepts formatting. A worked example. Take the sentence: Reading long documents becomes easier with practice. Under the scaling rule the output emphasises roughly the first half of each word, so it renders as **Read**ing **lo**ng **docu**ments **beco**mes **eas**ier **wi**th **prac**tice — five or six words where the bold fragment is two to four characters depending on length. Read it and notice what your eye does: it lands on each bold cluster and skips the tails, which is exactly the movement pattern the format is trying to encourage. Whether that feels faster is something only you can judge on a passage of your own. Specific uses. A postgraduate student converts a dense 3,000-word journal section before a seminar so they can get through it in one sitting. A manager skims a 12-page quarterly report looking for the paragraphs that need real attention. A reader with ADHD converts a long-form article that they had abandoned twice in plain text. A teacher prepares a reading passage for a pupil who loses their line halfway through a paragraph. A translator reviewing their own output uses it to slow down and notice individual words rather than skimming past a mistake. A proofreader converts a chapter as a second pass, since the changed rhythm breaks the familiarity that makes your own typos invisible. A trainee revising for a professional exam reformats a set of practice notes so a long revision session feels less like wading. Be honest with yourself about whether it works: the research on bionic reading is genuinely thin, and controlled studies have not consistently shown a speed improvement over plain text. Some readers find it helpful, others find the constant weight changes distracting, and there is no shame in either result — test it on a passage you know well rather than assuming it must help. Two practical limitations. The bold formatting only survives into destinations that accept HTML or rich text, so pasting into a plain-text field loses the effect entirely. And screen readers ignore visual weight, so this offers nothing to a user who listens rather than reads. Conversion runs in your browser, so study notes and confidential documents are never uploaded, stored or logged.

Read·ing lo·ng docu·ments beco·mes eas·ier wi·th prac·tice — with the first portion of each word rendered bold
The bold fragment scales with word length, so a two-letter opening is emphasised in short words and three or four characters in longer ones, giving roughly a third to a half of each word.
Bionic reading is a format that bolds the first few letters of each word to create visual anchors. Your brain often recognizes a word from its opening letters, so these bold cues guide your eyes forward and can help you read faster and with more focus.
