What Is an Image Blur Tool and How Does Blurring Work

An image blur tool softens or obscures part or all of a photo. Its most important job is privacy: a face, a license plate, a home address, or an account number left visible in a screenshot can follow someone around long after you post it. This tool offers three blur types — Gaussian (a smooth, natural softening), Pixelate (a blocky mosaic used for censoring), and Motion (a directional streak for a sense of speed) — and lets you blur the whole image or draw rectangles over just the sensitive spots. Journalists, real-estate agents, support staff, and everyday people redacting a chat screenshot all use it, and because it runs in your browser, the sensitive original never leaves your device. Technically, your image is drawn onto an HTML canvas, and the blur is a pixel operation applied to that canvas. Gaussian blur averages each pixel with its neighbors using a weighted kernel, with the radius (roughly 3px to 50px here) controlling how far the smearing reaches. Pixelate divides a region into square blocks and paints each block with the single average color of the pixels inside it, so a larger block size destroys more detail. Motion blur averages pixels along a chosen angle (0–360°) to fake movement. In Select Area mode the effect is confined to the rectangles you draw, leaving the rest pixel-for-pixel untouched; in Full Image mode it covers everything evenly. The important thing to understand is that blurring is destructive on the exported copy — the original pixel values inside a blurred region are replaced by averages, so there is no hidden layer holding the source data. That is genuinely different from drawing a black box in a PDF or slide deck, where the covered content often still sits in the file underneath. The canvas redraw also drops EXIF metadata, which matters here because a photo you are redacting for privacy may carry GPS coordinates that would otherwise give the location away regardless of what you blurred. Here is a concrete redaction. Suppose you have a 1600×900 screenshot of an order confirmation showing a customer's name and address. Switch to Select Area mode, drag two rectangles over those lines, choose Pixelate with a block size around 20px, and export. The rest of the screenshot stays perfectly sharp while the two boxes become unreadable colored grids — safe to share in a support thread. If you instead used a light 8px Gaussian blur, the text might still be partially guessable, which is why heavy pixelation is the safer choice for real censoring. The everyday uses are clear. Redact personal data — names, addresses, emails, account numbers, signatures — before posting a screenshot publicly. Blur bystanders' faces or a car's plate in a street photo to protect privacy. Real-estate agents blur neighbors' windows or house numbers in listing photos. And on the creative side, a full-image Gaussian blur makes a soft background for overlaid text, while motion blur adds energy to an action shot. Batch mode applies one blur configuration to a whole folder and returns a ZIP. The biggest pitfall is under-blurring sensitive content. A gentle Gaussian blur can sometimes be partially reversed with sharpening software, so for anything that truly must stay hidden, use a coarse pixelate (large block size) or a very high Gaussian radius — or cover the area with a solid block entirely. Only the regions you blur are affected, so the rest of your image keeps full quality, and exporting as PNG keeps those untouched areas lossless.
