Morse code assigns every letter, digit and common punctuation mark a short pattern of dots and dashes. This translator runs it both ways: type plain text and get the dots and dashes, or paste dots and dashes and get the message back. Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail worked out the original scheme in the 1830s for telegraph wires, and the international version standardised in 1865 is still the one in use. Amateur radio operators learning for a licence exam, scouts working through a signalling badge, puzzle and escape-room designers, and anyone who has found a mysterious string of dots in a game all end up needing a reference table they can query quickly. Encoding is a straight table lookup. Each character maps to its pattern — E is a single dot, T a single dash, A is dot dash, S is three dots, O is three dashes. The clever part of the original design was frequency weighting: the most common English letters got the shortest patterns, which is why E and T are one symbol each while Q and Y take four. Spacing carries as much meaning as the symbols. Within a letter the marks run together, a single space separates letters, and a slash or a wider gap separates words. Get the spacing wrong and the decode fails even when every dot is right. The tool follows the International Morse Code table for the 26 letters, digits 0 to 9 and common punctuation, and decoding simply reverses the lookup after splitting on those separators. A worked example. Type SOS. S maps to three dots and O maps to three dashes, so the output is ... --- ... with single spaces between the three letters. Now something longer: HELP. H is four dots, E is one dot, L is dot dash dot dot, and P is dot dash dash dot, giving .... . .-.. .--. — four groups separated by three spaces. Add a second word and a slash appears between them. Feed that exact string back into decode mode and you recover HELP, which is the round-trip check worth doing whenever you are unsure whether your spacing is correct. Where it gets used. A trainee radio amateur checks their own copy of a practice transmission letter by letter. A scout leader prepares a set of coded messages for a night exercise. An escape-room designer engraves a four-letter Morse clue onto a prop and needs the pattern exactly right before it goes to the workshop. A geocacher decodes a hint left in dots and dashes on a cache page. A parent building a treasure hunt writes each clue in Morse and prints a reference table for the children to work from, which turns a twenty-minute hunt into an afternoon. Learn E, T, A, N, I and M first — they are one or two symbols each and cover a surprising share of ordinary English, which makes early practice far less discouraging than starting alphabetically. The mistake beginners make is treating the gaps as decoration: three dots run together is S, but three dots with spaces between them is E E E, and a decoder will tell you so. When you paste Morse from another source, check that letter gaps and word slashes survived the copy, because some chat apps collapse multiple spaces and quietly destroy the message. Also note that Morse is a signalling code, not encryption — anyone with a table can read it, so it hides nothing from a determined reader.
