How the One Rep Max Calculator Estimates Your 1RM

Your one rep max, written 1RM, is the heaviest load you could lift for a single clean repetition of a given exercise. Almost every strength program is written as percentages of it: five sets of three at 85%, or back-off sets at 70%. That makes 1RM the number you need before you can load a bar correctly. Testing it for real is another matter. A true max attempt is fatiguing, needs a spotter, and risks technique breaking down under load, so most lifters and coaches estimate it instead. You take a set you already did, at a weight you controlled for a handful of reps, and run it through a prediction formula. Powerlifters, gym members following an app program, and school coaches assessing a squad all use this shortcut. Two formulas dominate. This calculator uses Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30), where weight is the load you lifted and reps is the number of clean repetitions you completed. The alternative is Brzycki: 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). They agree closely at low reps and diverge as reps climb, with Brzycki reading lower. Both are most reliable between 1 and 10 reps, because every extra rep adds prediction error, and past about 12 reps the result reflects your muscular endurance more than your maximal strength. That is why you should feed it a set where you stopped with one or two reps still in reserve, not a grinding set of 15 taken to failure. Say you squatted 100 kg for 5 solid reps. Epley gives 100 × (1 + 5 ÷ 30) = 100 × 1.1667 = 116.7 kg, so your estimated max is roughly 117 kg. Brzycki on the same set gives 100 × 36 ÷ 32 = 112.5 kg, which is the more conservative read; the honest answer is somewhere in that 112 to 117 kg band. From the Epley figure, 80% is about 93 kg for sets of eight, 85% is about 99 kg for triples, and 90% is around 105 kg for heavy singles. A second case: 60 kg on the bench for 8 reps gives 60 × (1 + 8 ÷ 30) = 76 kg, so your 80% working weight is 61 kg. Where this earns its keep. A lifter starting a 5/3/1 or Sheiko-style program needs a training max for squat, bench, deadlift, and press, and getting four estimates from four recent sets takes a minute instead of four gruelling test days. A rugby player returning from a shoulder injury re-estimates from a light set of eight, so the physio can prescribe percentage work without a max attempt. A coach testing 20 students uses one submaximal set each, keeping the session safe and fast. Someone chasing a first 100 kg bench checks whether they are actually close: 90 kg for 3 reps predicts 99 kg, which means the milestone is one good training block away, not months. A few honest limits. Your real max swings by several percent day to day with sleep, food, stress, and warm-up quality, so treat the estimate as a planning figure and not a fixed ceiling. Prediction accuracy also depends on the lift; it holds up well for squat and bench but tends to overestimate deadlift, where grip and lower-back fatigue bite sooner. The classic beginner mistake is entering a set taken to complete failure with sloppy form at 15 reps, then chasing the inflated number and getting pinned under the bar.
