Pick the first day of bleeding in your most recent period, not the day it finished, since every date the tool produces is counted from that starting point.
Enter your average cycle length in days, measured from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. This matters more than most people expect.
Read your estimated ovulation date and the fertile window around it, then cover the whole window rather than a single day, because sperm survive several days.
Ovulation is the moment an ovary releases a mature egg, and it is the hinge your whole cycle turns on. The egg survives only 12 to 24 hours after release, which means conception is possible during a short window each month rather than throughout it. This calculator estimates the day you are likely to ovulate and the fertile days surrounding it, using the first day of your last period and your average cycle length. Couples trying to conceive use it to time intercourse rather than guessing. Women coming off contraception use it to relearn their own rhythm. Anyone charting mood, energy, skin, or appetite swings uses it to see whether those changes line up with the hormonal shifts around ovulation and the luteal phase that follows. The method rests on one useful piece of physiology: the luteal phase, the stretch between ovulation and the start of your next period, is far more consistent than the follicular phase before it. For most women it runs 12 to 14 days regardless of whether their total cycle is 25 days or 35. So the calculation counts backwards from your predicted next period: ovulation date = first day of last period + cycle length − 14 days. Your next period is estimated as last period + cycle length. The fertile window is then the ovulation date plus the two days before and one to two days after, because sperm can survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus while the egg lasts under a day. That asymmetry is why the days leading up to ovulation matter more than the days after it. Work through real dates. Your last period began 2 April 2026 and your cycle averages 28 days. Your next period is predicted for 30 April. Counting back 14 days from that gives ovulation on 16 April, so the fertile window runs 14 to 18 April, with 15 and 16 April the highest-probability days. Now change nothing except cycle length: at 32 days, the next period moves to 4 May, ovulation shifts to 20 April, and the fertile window becomes 18 to 22 April. Same period start date, ovulation four days later. That shift is the entire reason a generic day-14 rule misleads so many people with longer cycles. Four specific situations. A couple in month five of trying stops having intercourse only on a single predicted day and instead covers every other day across 14 to 18 April, which raises the odds considerably given sperm survival. A woman with a 35-day cycle who had been told to try on day 14 discovers her actual ovulation lands nearer day 21, which explains months of mistimed attempts. A woman preparing for an IUI appointment uses the estimate to know roughly which week to keep free. Someone tracking basal body temperature compares the predicted date against the small temperature rise she records, and after three cycles finds her own ovulation runs two days earlier than the formula suggests, so she adjusts. The assumption that breaks this tool is cycle regularity. If your cycles swing between 26 and 38 days, the prediction inherits that entire range of error, and conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders, plus stress, illness, travel, heavy training, and significant weight change, can delay or skip ovulation altogether. In those cases the calendar method is weak and physical signals are stronger: ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge 24 to 36 hours before release, basal body temperature confirms ovulation after it happens, and egg-white-textured cervical mucus signals the fertile days directly. Use at least two of these together if timing matters. One critical warning: this is a conception planning aid and must never be used as contraception. Sperm survival, variable ovulation timing, and the tool's built-in assumptions make it unsuitable for preventing pregnancy, so use a proven method for that. These results are general information rather than medical advice, and if you have been trying for a year without success, or six months if you are over 35, see a doctor. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so your dates are never uploaded or stored.
Next period = first day of last period + cycle length Ovulation date = first day of last period + cycle length − 14 Fertile window = ovulation date − 2 days to ovulation date + 2 days last period = first day of bleeding in your most recent period cycle length = days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next 14 = average luteal phase length in days (the gap between ovulation and the next period)
Input
Last period 2 April 2026, 28-day cycle
Result
Ovulation 16 April; fertile window 14–18 April; next period 30 April
2 April + 28 = 30 April for the next period, then 30 April − 14 days = 16 April for ovulation, with the window spanning two days either side.
Input
Last period 2 April 2026, 32-day cycle
Result
Ovulation 20 April; fertile window 18–22 April
2 April + 32 = 4 May, minus 14 days gives 20 April. The same period start with a longer cycle shifts ovulation four days later, which a fixed day-14 rule would miss.
Helperzy estimates ovulation as your last period date plus your cycle length minus 14 days, based on the fairly constant luteal phase. It then marks your fertile window as the two days before and after ovulation for the best chance of conception.
