Runners live in one unit and gym equipment lives in another. A training plan says run 8 km at 5:30 per kilometre. The treadmill in front of you has a dial marked 10.9 km/h. A race pace band lists minutes per mile while your watch is set to metric. Pace measures the time to cover one unit of distance, so lower is faster. Speed measures the distance covered in one unit of time, so higher is faster. They describe exactly the same thing from opposite ends, and this tool converts cleanly in both directions across both unit systems. Anyone who has stood on a treadmill trying to divide 60 by 5.5 in their head while already sweating knows why that is useful. The relationship is a reciprocal: speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per kilometre, and pace in min/km = 60 ÷ speed in km/h. The 60 is simply the number of minutes in an hour. The identical relationship holds for imperial units, with speed in mph = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per mile. Crossing between the systems needs one more factor, since 1 mile equals 1.609344 kilometres: multiply km/h by 0.621371 to get mph, and multiply a min/km pace by 1.609344 to get min/mile. One detail catches people out. Pace is written as minutes and seconds, but the formula needs a decimal, so 5:30 per kilometre must be entered as 5.5 minutes, not 5.30. Thirty seconds is half a minute, so it becomes 0.5, and 5:45 becomes 5.75. Work through two conversions. A 5:00 per kilometre pace: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h exactly, and in imperial that is 12 × 0.621371 = 7.46 mph, or a pace of 5 × 1.609344 = 8.05 minutes per mile, which reads as 8:03. Now go the other way from a treadmill setting of 10.9 km/h: 60 ÷ 10.9 = 5.50 min/km, so 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometre. Extend that first pace to a race distance and the value becomes obvious: 5:00 per kilometre across a 42.195 km marathon is 42.195 × 5 = 210.98 minutes, which is 3 hours 31 minutes. Hold 5:30 per kilometre over a half marathon and you get 21.0975 × 5.5 = 116 minutes, or 1 hour 56 minutes. Four situations where the conversion does real work. A runner whose plan prescribes 5:15 per kilometre tempo intervals sets the treadmill to 11.4 km/h and knows the session matches her outdoor training. A cyclist and a runner training together compare a 30 km/h bike leg against a 12 km/h run leg and see the ratio plainly. A triathlete reading a US coaching plan in minutes per mile converts 8:00 per mile to 4:58 per kilometre before entering it into a metric watch. Someone chasing a sub-4-hour marathon works backwards: 240 minutes ÷ 42.195 km gives 5.69 min/km, so about 5:41 per kilometre, or 10.6 km/h on a treadmill. A few practical notes. The conversion is pure arithmetic and exact, but the number it produces is not a promise about your running. Treadmill belt calibration drifts, and many machines read optimistically by 3 to 5%, so the same effort outdoors often feels harder. Treadmills also remove wind resistance, which is why some runners add a 1% incline to approximate flat outdoor road running. The mistake to watch for is the decimal one already mentioned: entering 5:30 as 5.30 gives 60 ÷ 5.3 = 11.32 km/h instead of the correct 10.91 km/h, a 4% error that quietly ruins an interval session. Also remember that GPS watches measure distance with a small margin of error, typically 1 to 2% on open roads and worse under trees or between tall buildings, so your recorded pace may differ slightly from the truth.
