The 1:√2 Ratio & Halving Rule

Every ISO 216 sheet has a width-to-height ratio of 1 : √2 (≈ 1 : 1.4142). This is the one ratio that stays the same when you fold a sheet in half — so A5 is exactly half of A4, A4 is half of A3, and so on up to A0.

A0 is defined to have an area of about 1 square metre (841 × 1189 mm), and each step down halves the area. This is why scaling a document between A-sizes never distorts the layout.

Pixels are computed as round(mm ÷ 25.4 × DPI). For example, A4 (210 × 297 mm) at 300 DPI = 2480 × 3508 px.
