The honesty about gaps is the whole point, because a wrong small character is worse than a normal one. When you paste a formula into a chemistry assignment, a subscript that is actually a lookalike glyph can be marked incorrect, so knowing exactly which characters converted lets you decide whether the result is fit for purpose. Rendering also depends on the destination font having the small glyphs; most modern fonts include the digits, but rarer subscript letters can show as boxes in older fonts, which is a display limitation rather than a conversion fault.
