Tipping norms vary widely by country, so use the percentage that fits the place: 15 to 20 percent is standard in the United States, while in many other countries tipping is optional or a modest rounding-up. A common question is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount; both are acceptable and the difference is usually small, so enter whichever bill figure you prefer. If people ordered very unequally, an equal split is a fair starting point that you can adjust by hand. The pitfall worth watching is a service charge already printed on the bill: many restaurants add 5 or 10 per cent themselves, and adding a full tip on top means you have paid twice for the same thing.
