How Words Per Minute Is Measured and What Counts as Good
A typing speed test measures how fast you can reproduce a passage of text accurately, reported in words per minute. The word "word" here is a convention rather than a count of actual words: every five characters typed, spaces included, counts as one word. That standard exists because real words vary wildly in length, and without a fixed unit a passage full of short words would inflate your score. Fixing the unit at five characters makes results comparable between any two tests, any two passages, and any two people. This test gives you four numbers on every keystroke — gross speed, net speed, accuracy, and error count — plus per-character colouring so you can see exactly where your fingers drifted.
Three formulas do all the work. Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, which measures raw finger speed and ignores whether you typed the right letters. Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, which is the figure employers and transcription agencies care about, because text full of errors has to be fixed before it is usable. Accuracy = (correct characters ÷ total characters typed) × 100, expressed as a percentage. The gap between your gross and net figures is the cost of your mistakes. Note that the clock starts on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, so reading the passage before you begin does not penalise you, and the test ends either when the timer runs out or when you finish the passage.
A worked example makes the arithmetic concrete. Suppose you type 240 characters during a 60-second test and 12 of those characters do not match the passage. Sixty seconds is one minute, so gross WPM is (240 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 48. Correct characters come to 240 − 12 = 228, giving net WPM of (228 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 45.6. Accuracy is (228 ÷ 240) × 100 = 95 percent. On a 30-second test the minutes value becomes 0.5, so 150 characters with 6 errors works out to a gross figure of 60 and a net figure of 57.6 at 96 percent accuracy. Shorter tests tend to produce higher numbers because you can sprint for 15 seconds in a way you cannot sustain for two minutes, which is worth remembering before comparing a 15-second result against someone else's minute-long one.
For context on the numbers themselves, the average adult types around 40 WPM with two-finger or partially trained technique. Office workers who type for most of the day usually land between 50 and 70. Data entry roles commonly ask for 50 to 60 WPM at 95 percent accuracy or better, medical and legal transcription work typically starts near 75, and competitive typists exceed 120. Accuracy carries more weight than most people expect, because every wrong character costs you a backspace plus the retype, meaning a single mistake burns three keystrokes. Somebody typing 55 WPM at 99 percent accuracy delivers more finished text per hour than somebody typing 70 WPM at 90 percent.
If you want the number to climb, the approach that works is dull but reliable. Slow down until your accuracy sits above 97 percent, keep your fingers anchored on the home row so each one returns to its resting key, and stop looking at the keyboard even when it feels slower at first. Read one word ahead of what your hands are doing, which keeps the flow continuous instead of stop-start. Practise punctuation and capital letters deliberately, since shift-key combinations are where most people lose time in real writing. Short daily sessions of ten minutes beat one long weekly session.
