Concrete is ordered by volume, not by area, and that trips up a lot of first-time pours. This calculator takes the length, width, and thickness of a slab, footing, or floor and returns the volume in cubic metres, cubic feet, and cubic yards, along with a rough count of 50 kg cement bags. Self-builders pouring a patio, homeowners laying a garage floor, and site supervisors placing a ready-mix order all need the figure before they can price the job or book a truck. Suppliers quote per cubic metre or per cubic yard depending on where you are, which is why all three units are shown together rather than one. The formula is volume = length × width × thickness, with every dimension in the same unit. Thickness is the odd one out because it is usually a few inches while the other two are in feet, so you enter it in inches and the tool divides by 12 before multiplying. Conversion then uses fixed factors: one cubic foot is 0.0283168 cubic metres, and one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. The cement-bag estimate multiplies the cubic-metre volume by 6.34 bags per cubic metre, which is typical of an M20-grade structural mix, and rounds up. That bag figure is a planning number only, because cement content changes with the grade — M15 uses less, M25 more — and with whether you are hand-mixing or buying ready-mix. A worked pour: a 10 foot by 10 foot slab at 6 inches thick. Thickness becomes 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet, so the volume is 10 × 10 × 0.5 = 50 cubic feet. That converts to 50 × 0.0283168 = 1.416 cubic metres, or 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. At 6.34 bags per cubic metre the cement requirement is about 8.98 bags, rounded up to 9. Scale it to a driveway 20 feet by 10 feet at 5 inches: 83.33 cubic feet, 2.360 cubic metres, 3.09 cubic yards, and 15 bags of cement. The real jobs look like this. Someone laying a 12 by 10 foot garage floor at 4 inches gets 1.133 cubic metres and 8 bags, which is small enough to hand-mix over a weekend rather than paying a ready-mix minimum charge. A builder pouring four column footings each 2 by 2 feet by 1.5 feet deep calculates one footing at 6 cubic feet and multiplies by four for 24 cubic feet total. A homeowner comparing a ready-mix quote against buying cement, sand, and aggregate separately uses the cubic-metre figure to price both routes. And anyone booking a mixer truck needs the volume in the supplier's unit, since ordering 1.85 yards when you meant 1.85 metres leaves you nearly a third short. Most suppliers also apply a minimum load charge, so very small pours are often cheaper to hand-mix on site. The expensive mistake is under-ordering. Concrete has to be placed in one continuous pour; if you run out and mix a fresh batch an hour later you get a cold joint, a weak seam that can crack and leak for the life of the slab. Add roughly 5 to 10 per cent for spillage, uneven subgrade, and formwork that bows slightly under load. Also check your subgrade is level before measuring thickness, since a dip of even an inch across a large slab adds real volume. This tool sizes the pour and does not design the mix: cement, sand, aggregate, and water ratios for structural work must come from an engineer's approved specification, and reinforcement is a separate calculation entirely.
