That separation matters when comparing offers, because a difference of a quarter per cent looks trivial on paper and turns into a few thousand rupees over five years. Retirees parking a lump sum, savers with a known goal date, and anyone weighing FD rates across three banks all need the real numbers rather than the headline rate. The engine is the standard compound-interest formula: A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t). P is your principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is the number of times interest compounds per year, and t is the tenure in years. Total interest is simply A minus P. Indian banks almost always compound FD interest quarterly, which makes n = 4, though the tool lets you switch to monthly, half-yearly, or annual to match your bank's exact terms. Dividing the rate by n and multiplying the period by n is what produces compounding: interest joins the balance four times a year and then starts earning on itself. Here is the arithmetic on a real deposit. Put ₹2,00,000 into a five-year FD at 7 per cent, compounded quarterly. The quarterly rate is 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75 per cent, and there are 4 × 5 = 20 compounding periods. So A = 2,00,000 × 1.0175^20 = 2,00,000 × 1.414778 = ₹2,82,956. That is why the compounding frequency deserves a look before you sign anything. The practical comparisons come up constantly. A saver with ₹5,00,000 to park for three years enters 6.5 per cent quarterly and sees a maturity of ₹6,06,704, then checks a second bank offering 6.75 per cent to decide whether switching is worth the paperwork. Someone saving for a down payment due in exactly 30 months can work backwards to check whether the FD alone gets them there. A parent laddering deposits across one, two, and three-year tenures can price each rung. And a retiree choosing between a cumulative FD that compounds and a non-cumulative one that pays quarterly interest into the account can see how much growth they give up for the regular income. Two caveats change the number in your hand. First, this is a gross figure before tax: FD interest is fully taxable at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS at 10 per cent once interest crosses the annual threshold, so a 7 per cent FD in the 30 per cent bracket returns closer to 4.9 per cent after tax. Second, breaking an FD early usually triggers a penalty of around 0.5 to 1 per cent off the applicable rate, and the bank recalculates at the rate for the period actually completed — so a deposit closed at 18 months does not earn the five-year rate for those months.
