How to Use Overtime Pay Calculator

1

Enter Regular Hours and Rate

Type your regular hours for the period and your base hourly rate. Use the base rate, not an overtime rate, or the premium gets counted twice.

2

Enter Overtime Details

Add the overtime hours worked and the multiplier that applies, such as 1.5 for time and a half or 2.0 for double time under your contract or local law.

3

View Total Pay

Read regular pay, overtime pay, and the gross total as separate lines. Compare the overtime figure against your payslip to confirm the premium was actually applied.

How the Overtime Pay Calculator Works

Overtime is paid at a premium, and this calculator separates that premium out so you can see what the extra hours are actually worth. You enter your regular hours, your base hourly rate, the overtime hours you worked, and the multiplier that applies, and it returns regular pay, overtime pay, and the combined gross total. Hourly and shift workers checking a payslip, anyone deciding whether a weekend shift is worth giving up the day for, and small business owners estimating a weekly payroll all use it. It is also the quickest way to catch an employer who has quietly paid overtime at the flat rate. Two components add together. Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay. The multiplier is the premium: 1.5 is time and a half, the most common rate for hours beyond a weekly threshold, and 2.0 is double time, often applied to public holidays, Sundays, or hours past a second threshold. Indian factory workers under the Factories Act are generally entitled to twice the ordinary rate for overtime, which is why 2.0 appears more often here than in Western payroll examples. One input catches people out: enter your base rate, not an overtime rate. The calculator applies the multiplier itself, so feeding it an already-inflated figure double-counts the premium. Here is a real week. You work 40 regular hours at ₹250 an hour plus 8 overtime hours at time and a half. Regular pay is 40 × 250 = ₹10,000. Overtime pay is 8 × 250 × 1.5 = ₹3,000, which works out to ₹375 per overtime hour. Total gross pay is ₹13,000, so those 8 hours added 30 per cent to a week's earnings. If the same 8 hours were paid at double time instead, overtime pay rises to ₹4,000 and the total to ₹14,000. Enter ₹375 as your base rate by mistake and the tool would report ₹4,500 for the overtime — a figure that looks plausible and is wrong. The decisions this informs are everyday ones. A factory worker on ₹180 an hour doing 48 regular hours plus 6 hours of statutory double-time overtime earns ₹8,640 regular and ₹2,160 overtime for ₹10,800 gross, and can check that against the payslip line by line. Someone offered a Sunday shift compares the double-time earnings against what the day off is worth to them. A shift worker choosing between two employers, one paying a higher base with no overtime premium and one paying less with guaranteed time and a half, models a typical week under both. And a small business owner sizing a rush order sees the true labour cost before quoting, since overtime hours cost 50 to 100 per cent more than regular ones. Three things to keep in mind. This is gross pay, before income tax, provident fund, professional tax, and any other deduction, so take-home will be lower. Overtime eligibility and rates are set by local law and your contract, not by convention — thresholds, whether the premium applies daily or weekly, and whether managers and salaried staff qualify at all vary widely, so check your agreement rather than assuming. And the mistake worth guarding against is treating a flat-rate payment for extra hours as overtime: if your employer pays the same ₹250 an hour for hours 41 to 48, that is not overtime, and this calculator makes the shortfall visible in rupees, which is a far more useful thing to raise with a payroll department than a vague feeling of being short-changed. Everything runs in your browser, so your pay details are never uploaded or stored.

Overtime Pay Calculator Formula & Method

Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier Total gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay regular hours = hours worked at the standard rate hourly rate = your base rate, before any overtime premium overtime hours = hours worked beyond the standard threshold multiplier = the overtime premium (1.5 for time and a half, 2.0 for double time) Effective overtime rate = hourly rate × multiplier Result is gross pay, before income tax, provident fund, and other deductions.

Examples: Overtime Pay Calculator

Input

40 regular hours at ₹250/hour plus 8 overtime hours at 1.5×

Result

Regular ₹10,000 · overtime ₹3,000 (₹375/hour) · total ₹13,000

40 × 250 = ₹10,000 and 8 × 250 × 1.5 = ₹3,000, so 8 hours added 30% to the week. Entering ₹375 as the base rate by mistake would wrongly report ₹4,500.

Input

48 regular hours at ₹180/hour plus 6 overtime hours at 2.0×

Result

Regular ₹8,640 · overtime ₹2,160 (₹360/hour) · total ₹10,800

48 × 180 = ₹8,640 and 6 × 180 × 2 = ₹2,160. Double time is the statutory rate for many Indian factory workers under the Factories Act.
