How to Calculate Percentage Change Between Two Numbers

Percentage change measures how far a number moved relative to where it started. The percentage is what makes comparisons meaningful: a ₹50 rise means something very different on a ₹200 base than on a ₹5,000 base, and only the percentage captures that. The formula is percentage change = ((new value − old value) ÷ old value) × 100. Three parts: the new value, the old value, and the division by the old value that turns an absolute move into a relative one. A positive result is an increase; a negative one is a decrease. The critical detail is that the denominator is always the original figure, never the new one and never the average of the two. Get that wrong and every answer shifts. The absolute difference, new minus old, is reported too because it answers a different and equally practical question — how many rupees, marks, or followers actually moved. Run a real pair through it. A product priced at ₹200 goes up to ₹250. The difference is 50, divided by the original 200 gives 0.25, and multiplied by 100 that is a 25 per cent increase. Now reverse the same two numbers: from 250 down to 200, the difference is −50, divided by 250 gives −0.20, so a 20 per cent decrease. A value that rises 10 per cent and then falls 10 per cent does not return to its start — 100 becomes 110, and 10 per cent of 110 is 11, leaving 99. Apply each change in sequence to the running figure instead of summing the percentages. Two other cautions: percentage change and percentage difference are not the same thing, since the latter divides by the average of the two values rather than the original, and results become mathematically ambiguous when the starting value is zero or negative, so treat those with care.
