How the Tile Calculator Works Out Tile Quantity

A tile calculator turns a room measurement and a tile size into the one number a tile shop actually needs: how many pieces to load onto the truck. You give it the length and width of the floor or wall, the dimensions of a single tile, and a wastage percentage, and it returns the raw tile count, the count including wastage, and an optional cost if you add a price per tile. Homeowners tiling a bathroom, builders ordering for a whole flat, and anyone checking whether a contractor's material list looks padded all start here. Tile shops sell by the box, so knowing the piece count before you walk in is what stops a second trip mid-job. The arithmetic is a division. Tiles needed = floor area ÷ area of one tile, then multiplied by (1 + wastage ÷ 100) and rounded up, because half a tile is not a purchasable unit. The awkward part is units: rooms get measured in feet while tiles are sold in inches or millimetres, so tile dimensions are converted to feet first. A 12 by 12 inch tile becomes 1 by 1 foot, giving exactly one square foot of coverage. A 24 by 16 inch tile becomes 2 by 1.333 feet, or 2.67 square feet each. Wastage covers the pieces cut at walls, around door frames and drain outlets, and the ones that crack during handling. Ten per cent suits a plain grid layout; diagonal or herringbone patterns and small rooms full of cuts need 15 per cent or more. Here are two real jobs. A bedroom floor 10 feet by 12 feet is 120 square feet. With 12 by 12 inch tiles at one square foot each, that is 120 tiles before wastage, and 120 × 1.10 = 132 tiles with a 10 per cent buffer. At ₹65 per tile the material bill is 132 × 65 = ₹8,580. Now switch to larger 24 by 16 inch tiles in the same room: each covers 2.67 square feet, so 120 ÷ 2.67 = 45 tiles, rising to 50 with wastage. Same floor, same area, a completely different count and a very different per-piece price to compare. The situations are specific. A homeowner tiling a 6 by 8 foot bathroom in 24 by 24 inch tiles finds only 12 tiles cover the floor, and after a 15 per cent allowance for cuts around the WC and drain, buys 14 — a case where a single broken tile is a meaningful fraction of the order. A contractor pricing a three-bedroom flat runs each room separately and adds the counts, because tile sizes often differ between bedrooms and the kitchen. Someone weighing a large-format tile against a standard one uses the count to compare total cost honestly, since ₹65 a piece for a one-square-foot tile is dearer per square foot than ₹160 for a 2.67 square foot one. And anyone handed a contractor's material list can check the count against the room measurement before signing off. One pitfall does real damage: ordering exactly what you need and going back for more later. Tile shades vary between production batches, and a replacement box from a different lot can be visibly off against the first, which shows badly on a finished floor. Order the wastage buffer in the same purchase and keep a few spares for future repairs. Also remember this counts tiles only — adhesive, grout, spacers, and skirting are separate line items, and grout joint width slightly reduces how many tiles a given area really takes, which the buffer absorbs.
