A grade calculator tells you where you stand in a course and what it will take to finish where you want. Most courses weight their components — homework might be worth 20% of the grade, the midterm 25%, the final 30%, and so on — so your grade is not a simple average of your scores but a weighted one. This tool computes that weighted grade from your assignment rows, converts it to a letter, and, most usefully, runs the calculation in reverse to tell you the exact score you need on the final exam to hit a target grade. Students checking their standing mid-semester and anyone anxious about a final exam are the core users. The weighted grade formula is the sum of each score multiplied by its weight, divided by the sum of the weights. When the weights add up to 100 the divisor is 100, but the tool divides by the actual weight total so partial grades (before every component is in) still make sense, and it warns you if your weights do not sum to 100 in case that is a mistake. There is also a points mode, where instead of weights you enter points earned and points possible per item, and the grade is total earned divided by total possible times 100. The reverse mode uses the algebra required equals (target minus current contribution) divided by the final's weight — equivalently required = (Target minus Current times (1 minus W)) divided by W, where W is the final's weight as a fraction. If that required score exceeds 100, the tool says so honestly and shows the maximum grade still possible rather than printing an impossible number. Here is a worked example of the question students actually ask. You currently have a 77% in the class, the final exam is worth 45% of the grade, and you want to finish with an 85%. Plugging in: required = (85 minus 77 times (1 minus 0.45)) divided by 0.45 = (85 minus 42.35) divided by 0.45 = 42.65 divided by 0.45 = 94.78%. So you need about 94.78% on the final to reach an 85% overall — tough but possible. Now suppose you had a 60% going in with the same 45% final and wanted a 90%: the formula returns 210%, which is impossible, so the tool reports not achievable and tells you the best you can now finish with is 78%. That honesty is the whole point; a tool that shows 210% helps no one. A student three weeks before finals enters their homework, quiz, and midterm scores with the syllabus weights to see their current standing and plan revision. Someone deciding whether to stress about a final uses the reverse mode to learn they only need a 62% to keep their B, and relaxes accordingly. A student on the edge of two letter grades adjusts the target and sees exactly what the final must be to cross into the higher band. A learner in a points-based class (total points, no weights) uses the points mode to add up earned versus possible without converting anything by hand. The common mistake is treating a weighted course like a simple average, which badly misestimates your grade when a heavily weighted final is still outstanding — the weighted formula is what your instructor actually uses. Another is panicking over a required score without checking whether it is even achievable; the tool's not-achievable message and maximum-possible figure keep expectations grounded. Bear in mind the letter-grade thresholds are configurable because schools differ (some use 90/80/70/60, others use plus and minus bands), and the calculator does not know your instructor's rounding or curve.
