How Exam Percentage Is Calculated and the CBSE Best-of-5 Rule
A marks-to-percentage calculator converts the marks you scored across subjects into the percentage that report cards, admission forms, and job applications ask for. The base formula is simple — total marks obtained divided by total maximum marks, times 100 — but exam boards add rules that a generic percentage calculator misses, chiefly the CBSE best-of-five convention and the grade bands that turn marks into letters. Summing all six over 600 would give 498 divided by 600, about 83%. But under the CBSE best-of-five rule the lowest score, the 60, is dropped, leaving 85, 92, 78, 88, and 95, which sum to 438; divided by the best-five maximum of 500 that is 87.6%. Dropping the weakest subject lifts the percentage from about 83% to 87.6%, which is exactly why students care about the rule. For the reverse mode, if you already have 340 out of 400 and want 90% across a 500 total, you would need 110 in the final 100-mark paper — impossible, so the tool flags it.
A Class 10 or 12 CBSE student computes their result using best-of-five to match how the board reports it, rather than dividing by all six subjects. A student comparing offers enters marks per subject to see which subjects earned which grade bands. Someone with one exam left uses the reverse mode to learn the marks needed for a target percentage, and whether that target is even reachable.
